"The best way to repair a tear or split is to sew a patch in place or restitch the seam, but hand-sewing, if there is much of it, is slow and tedious. For general-purpose sail repair, select a #16 needle with a triangular shank. Use waxed polyester sail twine. A sewing palm will make the work much easier. Repair tears in the fabric with a herringbone stitch, also called a sailmaker's darn. Knot the end of the doubled twine to start the repair. Make four or five stitches per inch and place them well back from the edges. Pull the stitches tight enough to bring the torn edges together, but not so tight that you introduce a pucker. Tie off and tuck the loose end."
